German Dontsov was one of the most active members of the “Latvian artists – participants of the Great Patriotic War”, he took part in all the exhibitions of the group. In 1960, Dontsov was admitted to the Union of Artists of the Latvian SSR. His personal exhibitions were held in Riga (1967) and Jurmala (1973). The works were exhibited in many republican, all-union and international exhibitions – in Chile (1965), USA (1966), Great Britain (1967), France (1968), Germany (1972), Japan (1970, 1973), Finland (1972), Switzerland (1973).

In the first period he wrote primarily industrial landscapes with elements of figural compositions, where human figures had independent meaning. Gradually the landscape of his work displaces all other genres, and the role of the human figure or figures in the picture is reduced to staffage. Works of this period are different sonority and color expressive.
